Although the Six Nations has only existed in its current guise since 2000 a northern hemisphere rugby tournament has existed for centuries in various forms.
When it first began in 1883 it was known simply as the Home Nations Championship and contested only between Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales.
Shortly after the turn of the century the tournament was rebranded as the Five Nations Championship with the addition France and then again in the year 2000 with the addition of Italy.
Now, 18 years later, the tournament is stronger than ever and Ireland look set to challenge current champions England for a piece of the silverware at stake. If Ireland did succeed this year it would be only our fourth victory in the tournament (in its current form) with previous victories coming in 2009, 2014 and 2015!
The days of Brian O’Driscoll, Ronan O’Gara and Paul O’Connell might be long gone but Ireland are in prime position this Spring with Johnny Sexton, Cian Healy, Peter O’Mahony and the young Jordan Larmour ready to go.
Excited yet?
