Lonely Planet names Belfast and Causeway Coastal Route Best Region to Visit in 2018

The last 7 days have been a whirlwind for Belfast and the famous Causeway Coastal Route because just over one week ago Lonely Planet named the two destinations as the “best region to visit in 2018”

The travel giant, which awards the title for a combination of factors including attractions, quality and value for money, noted the region boasted “timeless beauty and high-grade distractions – golf, whiskey and some of the world’s most famous rocks”. Which all sounds pretty good to us!

As you might imagine, it’s been a pretty big deal here on the Emerald Isle!

For decades the north, Belfast in particular, has remained somewhat of a hidden gem to outsiders and tourists but slowly, over time, that has changed and it couldn’t be more deserved.

Belfast City

Belfast city has a long storied history but over the last 10 to 15 years the city has experienced incredible regeneration and it’s almost unrecognisable from two or three decades ago.

Nowadays visitors, of which there have been up to 110,000 in the last twelve months alone, can enjoy a foodie heaven at St George’s Market (first opened in 1604), a unique black taxi tour of the city, a walk around Crumlin Road Gaol and countless other attractions.

There’s also the famous Titanic Centre, which has welcomed over 440,000 in just the last few months, where visitors can learn more about the doomed ocean liner and see the grand staircase as made famous in the movie!

Add to that the incredible eateries, the famous Crown Saloon Bar, the upcoming George Best inspired hotel and the lively Cathedral Quarter and it’s no surprise Lonely Planet made the choice they did.

Causeway Coastal Route

“Beyond Belfast lies the Causeway Coast, whose timeless beauty and high-grade distractions are more popular than ever” so say Lonely Planet and honestly, we couldn’t disagree with them even if we wanted to.

After the packed cobbled streets of Belfast, the magnificent Causeway Coastal Route is the perfect getaway.

A rugged coastline, battered by the Atlantic Ocean over centuries, iconic landmarks, like The Giant’s Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Dunluce Castle and Fairhead, countless Game of Thrones filming locations and idyllic seaside towns and villages all make the Causeway Coast one of the best spots in all of Ireland.

Sounds pretty good? That’s just a taster…
